Thanks Paul - bumping this to a new post...
http://dangerdata.com/2008/10/01/steve-fossett-id-and-money-found-by-california-hiker/

At the risk of sounding too conspiracy theoretical I think this does not put the case to rest that he did not fake his own death. It is true that the case for death is stronger now, but if you were faking you'd want to leave some evidence you were near death before you disappeared. Where in the world is his plane? I'm really thinking hoax here...

Breaking news - looks like a hiker found some of Fossett's belonging in the woods near Mammoth, CA.

So much for faking his death if this is true.

Many witness reports in plane crash investigations are worthless but often they are valuable particularly so if the observer has sufficient aeronautical knowledge. In the SF search we really have very few witnesses. The ranchhand who is considered the last known viewer of the aircraft was busy making a cell phone call to his girlfriend and was only marginally aware of the airplane having passed over head. At the conclusion of the phone call he spotted a pinpoint image of an airplane and assumed it was the same plane. If his assumption is correct the search area should be near Mt. Grant. If not Mud Flats would be a better area. Some worry about powerlines due to the last known altitude but it would seem such prime candidates would have been searched by now. SF had a scheduled meeting with Baron Hilton and we can assume a certain minimum time for "putting the plane to bed". This gives a certain flying time and therefore range if we believe he would stick strictly to the schedule.

Why would SF want to disappear?
How would anyone with his ego be able to "lie low somewhere"?

FG I just don't know, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Fossett will turn up alive in a few years and we will learn that his pal Richard Branson helped him with this - probably indirectly enough that he can maintain plausible deniability.

Has Branson insisted in any interviews that Fossett is dead or has he been vague about things?

The real problem is the vast size of the area and the ruggedness of the terrain.
It is unknown if Steve Fossett decided to enjoy a flight longer than would be anticipated if he intended to return in time for the lunch appointment with Baron Hilton. The ranch employee who observed the plane may be mistaken as to the day he made that observation. If Steve Fossett was on a pleasure flight and felt an emotional attraction to areas he had climbed previously he might have flown initially to Mt. Grant near Hawthorne but also further south.

One very experienced searcher commented that he has been within fifty feet of a crash scene and not spotted it. In rugged terrain and dense forrests visual penetration is often slight.

Its not unusual at all particularly considering the terrain and the search probably being in the wrong area.

The insurance company gets to keep the interest even if they have to eventually pay out on the policies.
